Welcome to the Animal house

We have a bit of a strange menagerie at our home…most of whom have made a spot here for themselves without Brian or I even realizing it until it was too late. Or so we like to tell ourselves.

When we first moved in to our house, there was just the four of us – Me, Brian, littleb and Gizmo. Not long after we moved in, we decided to get involved with a local cat rescue organization, Tails High, through whom we fostered kitties in our home. We fostered a number of cats through Tails High, all of whom eventually found their forever homes…until Georgia.

Georgia was one of a litter of kittens that was born at Tails High. We fostered her and another little black kitten for a week or so and decided that we needed to adopt Georgia before the week was out. According to the ladies at Tails High, Georgia was a bit of a spitfire from the moment she was born – which included her being the first kitten they had ever seen explode out of her birth sac before her mom could even begin to assist. She has not lost a single bit of this sassiness and 2 years later, she is still almost as tiny as she was when we first brought her home.

She’s our aloof cat – a much bigger fan of Brian (or when she’s hungry, whomever is near the Kitchen) and prone to sleeping in the sun beam that hits the top of our cat climb bookcase.

Then, of course, we have The Count. Sterling was another one of our foster cats who was actually living with us when my parents came to visit in 2011. Sterling was found in a parking lot and was covered in grease and oil. As such, he had to have his beautiful tail shaved. Not something he likes to talk about these days. He also, due to a nasty infection, had to have all of his teeth removed :( (here is the original story about Sterl, before he came to our foster house). Luckily the no-teeth thing hasn’t slowed him down one bit…in fact it probably assists his gobbling action when it comes to food time.

We call Sterling ‘Poppy-Jack’s cat’. More than likely we never would have let him go back to Tails High…but it’s always easier to blame someone else for the addition to our animal house.

Basically what this all boils down to, is that we FAIL as foster parents. But happily so ;)

Last, but not least, we have Sir Digby. After Gizmo passed away, it was noticeably quiet in the house. The lack of a shorty puppy made for a huge hole in our barnyard and so we decided to start looking for a new addition. Thanks to some extra sluething by Mama Marr – we found Digby in VA Beach. We weren’t sure from the start how well he would get on with the cats, as he had never been around them before. Gizmo was always terrified of the cats and Sterling definitely used this to his advantage.

As of now, we have our good days and our bad, but mostly the zoo gets along okay. Digby is still pretty much convinced that all the toys in the house are his, Sterling is absolutely convinced that he still has all his teeth and Georgia…well Georgia just looks and acts like a bird.

Welcome to our nuthouse.

Dig Dog – raw feeding for the pup

According to Brian, our little frenchie is not the most well put together dog in the world. He is a little bit goofy, mostly deaf and tends to have a lot of issues with yeast (stinky ears, lots of gunky buildup and he licks his paws a lot). Also he likes chasing Georgia…but there’s not too much we can do about that ;)

20130311-162320.jpg

After seeing how well the cats have been dealing with the raw diet, we (royal) decided that it was time to test the waters with the dog too…did I mention that he likes to regurgitate a lot? No? Sorry about that. I knew it was going to be potentially messy, but the possibility that we could deal with some of his problems (itchy skin, constant yeast problems and perhaps even the farting?) made me want to forge ahead anyway.

20130311-162424.jpg

In the weeks leading up to the changeover, I did a lot of research online and also grabbed a copy of this book:

Which I found to be a great resource, but not exactly what I was looking for. Feeding dogs raw, is not quite as easy as cats…but once you have the main formula down it turns out to be just as simple to prepare 1-2 weeks of food at a time. This book covered all the details behind the ‘whys’ and also delved into supplements, but lacked (in my humble opinion) on the ‘how-to’s’. Luckily, I have at my disposal this awesome thing called the internets. So I spent a lot of time hunting through forums and reading other peoples posts on the hows. Youtube was also a valuable resource on answering some of my questions and leading me in the right direction.

20130311-162536.jpg

So basically, the way I am feeding Digby is changing slightly day by day as we see how he reacts to different meats and supplements…but after a month I think we are now on the right track. We started (as most of my research directed me to do) with Chicken breasts as most dogs will be able to digest Chicken without too many issues and freezer cubes (recipe courtesy Menu from Mars). For the first week Digby was doing GREAT and then he started to have diarrhea. Poor little man. I tried adding pumpkin to his food (a common remedy), but quickly realized that the biggest problem was that there was too much meat and not enough raw meaty bones.

20130311-162334.jpg

So we changed up the recipe again – instead of grinding half chook boob and half chook thigh, we did all chook thigh (bone in). Within a day of having this for breakkie and two wings for dinner (messy, but very effective on keeping his teeth clean) his “movements” were back to normal. Last weekend I bought some beef as well and cut this up into cubes for him. Everything I have read, has suggested that introducing other meats is wise, but take it slow. Some dogs are really good at digesting a wide range of raw meats, others cannot handle some of the richer meats (rabbit, duck, etc.).

20130311-162451.jpg

So currently, Digby is on the following diet:

Breakkie
Tablespoon of Yoghurt (by itself)
5oz raw meat (chicken or beef)
1x freezer cube

Dinner
Tablespoon of Yoghurt (by itself)
1x chicken wing (averages out at about 5oz each)
1x freezer cube

The yoghurt (with live cultures) is to assist his belly in digesting some of the meats. I have also found that the yoghurt helps a lot with his itchy skin. The other homeopathic remedy we have been trying (to treat his overabundance of yeast in his ears and feet) is the addition of Apple Cider Vinegar. We have been washing his paws daily and adding drops of the acv to his ears – the effect is amazing. His paws are not bothering him anymore and his ears lack that weird yeasty smell. I think that part of him will always be around, but I’m hoping that with his new diet we can bring it more under control.

He’s pretty chuffed with his new diet :)

Crockpot Freezer Recipes

So as part of my new years resolutions, I have decided to start making my freezer work for me (also, I joined a gym..but thats another story). By this I mean, I am going to attempt to make meals in advance and utilize the cool cool power of the upper section of my fridge. This weekend is my test run of assembling meals and next week the Brian and I will taste test some of these creations and perhaps even add them to our perma-list of evening go-to meals.

But…herein lies another issue. At the moment, we already have our cats on a raw diet, which takes up about 1/4 of the freezer space (I make about 3 weeks worth of food at a time, ideally I would love to be making more), I am transitioning the dawg to a raw diet as well (I have not begun this process yet….but i’m assuming that is going to take up about 1/2 of the freezer space) which leaves us humans with a measly 1/4. Not really going to work.

Sooo…it’s time to start hunting for either a stand up freezer that can slot in the pantry/laundry area OR a box freezer that can go somewhere else?

Kenmore has a few good selections..

Kenmore Chest Freezer 8.8

It’s black! I don’t know why I’m drawn to this selection but for some reason I think it might be easier to camouflage as a piece of furniture? Crazy…I know.

Kenmore Chest Freezer 13

This one is slightly bigger for not too much more cashola…and I haven’t even started looking for the best price/coupons/etc. yet.

And then there is the upright option. I can hide an upright in our pantry area.

Kenmore Upright Freezer 13.7

But from all accounts and reviews, that I’ve looked at so far the chest freezers are better.

For the record, I’m not attached to the Kenmore brand…they just seem to pop up more often and according to consumer reviews are pretty good. Also, I’m not that worried about price, other than I’d like it to fall under $400ish. Oh who am I kidding? I’d love it to be free and hand delivered by Nathan Fillion, but we don’t always get what we want and I am definitely info compromising :)

Any suggestions? Do you have a second freezer that you just can’t live without?

Its an (early) christmas miracle!

So we have had the baby gate down for a few months now and all animals have been (mostly) getting along. Or at least tolerating each other.

But then this happened…

20121214-131927.jpg

I had to take a photo to mark the occasion and to make sure that my eyes were not deceiving me. That is actually Sir Digby and Count Sterling laying on our bed within eating range of each other. The best part was that Sir Digby kept leaning over to sniff The Count and would dart back into position as soon as The Count moved.

Looks like Count Sterling is king of the castle again…

Lamby Legs!

Sir Digby Chicken Caesar is quite the connoisseur. This little man knows good food and great treats when he sees them, so when Mr Chewy reached out to see if we would be interested in taste testing some treats from Canidae there were two paws in the air.

Canidae Tidnips are definitely the kind of treats we like in our house – These treats, along with the rest of Canidae’s line are actually manufactured in a human grade facility by people who love animals as much as I do. We decided to try the Lamb & Rice (LAMB-LISCIOUS-yum!) flavour…because honestly, who doesn’t like lamb? We try to keep Digby on a low grain diet as it helps tremendously with his coat, skin and (butt) smells ;-) these treats are ideal because they contain no corn or wheat and are chock full of the good stuff like Real lamb, Vitamin E and Omega-3 Fatty Acids.

The other great thing about these treats is that they are nice and soft, so you can easily break them apart into smaller pieces. Be warned though…these really do smell delicious and are highly sought after by other four legged animals. I caught one of our cats trying to smuggle the bag of treats to an unknown location. They are now shut away in a higher cabinet far from the reach of naughty felines.

What did Sir Digby think?

According to Digby, Tidnips are a definite winner in our house – thank you Mr Chewy:-)

While Sir Digby was not paid for this review, he was provided with a free bag of Lamb & Rice treats to enjoy. All thoughts and typing are my own – also pardon the photos, it’s not easy to take pictures of a snorty, happy, excited pup!

I made the weekend my laaaaaaaady..

I got some STUFF done this weekend!

Brian was out of town visiting his son, and due to some wallpaper (work related) that may or may not have been arriving on Saturday, I stayed put. For those actually reading the wallpaper never showed, so that project gets delayed until the end of the month instead.

I hit up Michaels to look for some photo frames and managed to finally find some square 5×5 frames that were perfect for a couple of instagram piccies I printed out. Even better? The frames were all 40% off…the yarn was all on sale too, but thats a post for another day ;-)

20121112-075357.jpg

So what did I do with the frames? Added them to the (almost done, almost done!) wall pallet that we threw up installed lovingly last weekend.

20121112-075304.jpg
THE SMURFS ARE ALL MINE!

There are a few empty spaces left to fill…but I have some plans, and some additional photos that will be going up. All in good time my patient gladiolas!

I also tried my hand at home made cat food (I will write up a post about this too – well worth the effort). To say that it was a roaring success would be somewhat incorrect. I had cats climbing the counters trying to get into the freezer of wonder. Dinner time was even more ridiculous…it was like watching two real-life Garfields going to town. Apparently they really like raw chicken – who would have thought?

20121112-075414.jpg

All in all we had a good weekend. Managed to get most of the house cleaned, laundry done, lunches made (chicken caesar salad in a jar this week!) and about 60% of the leaves raked up in the backyard.

20121112-075508.jpg

Very tiring. All this work. Time for another nap, right Dig?

Brian and I went to the beach this weekend to spend time with his parents and to visit the kiddo. I managed to convince Brian that we should drive up on Friday night so that we could get a decent nights sleep before Saturdays festivities.

20121022-125843.jpg

As you can see…the decent nights sleep wasn’t quite enough for some of us.

20121022-125831.jpg

As the Dig-dog wasn’t really able to spend the entire day with us, he stayed at home with Poppy Bill. This is actually the view I had of my dog the entire weekend. Everywhere that Bill went, Dig was sure to follow :)

20121022-125822.jpg

Met this nice fellow when we were out for a drive. He kind of smiled (smirked?) at us and then posed for a photo. We would have stayed to chat, but the light turned green. He looked a little disappointed :(

WOAH CATS!

When we first brought Sir Digby Chicken Caesar home, we knew that he had never been around cats much. It was a little concerning, but we figured with some immersion therapy, a baby gate and a lot of time we might be able to convince all animals involved that this was a good idea.

6 months later we tore down that wall. It was…interesting….to say the least. Little Georgia hid behind a chair before making a run for the cat wall and spending the rest of the day sleeping in peaceful comfort. Sterling (the bully) made sure that Digby knew EXACTLY who was in charge and corralled him around the house.

All in all we were pretty excited about how things went. There were only a couple of chasing incidents, most of which ended with Sterling being the clear winner. Naturally.

This was the result at the end of the day..

It’s tough being a bullied dog.

Lately…

20121125-204845.jpg

Thats a great starting shot. Every week should start with a glass of vino!

Lady Georgia in a rare “pretty” photo.

Sir Dig-a-roo..this is his road bump/frog leg pose. He’s very good at it and does try to get in a lot of practice daily.

20121214-152016.jpg

Proof that the heathens in our house actually use some of the things we make for them!

Hai!

OH HAI!

YOU WERE WAITING FOR ME TO WRITE A NEW POST?

I”LL GET RIGHT ON IT AS SOON AS I FINISH THE FIRST ITEM ON MY TO-DO LIST…

I apologize for the mini departure…we will be right back after this short nap!
